01 / PROJECT CONTEXT

Project overview

This project presents the optical design of a continuous zoom lens for daylight imaging, configured for a 6 mm image size. The system was designed to maintain good optical performance throughout the entire zoom range, with particular attention to consistency across different zoom positions.

The zoom architecture incorporates a variator and a compensator, each consisting of one doublet and one singlet. This configuration provides the optical degrees of freedom required for focal length variation and image-plane compensation during zooming.

THE ENGINEERING PERSPECTIVE

Design discussion

Optical Performance Across the Zoom Range

The system was optimized to deliver good imaging performance across the full zoom range rather than prioritizing only specific focal length configurations. Performance was evaluated at different zoom positions to assess the consistency of image quality throughout continuous zoom operation.

Variator and Compensator Architecture

Both the variator and compensator groups consist of one doublet and one singlet. The variator controls the effective focal length, while the compensator coordinates its motion to maintain image-plane stability during zooming.

Consistency of Zoom Curves

The zoom curves were analyzed to evaluate the movement of the variator and compensator throughout the zoom range. Their consistency demonstrates the coordinated behavior of the two moving groups and supports the practical development of a continuous zoom mechanism.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates the development of a daylight continuous zoom lens with a 6 mm image size, combining a four-element moving-group configuration with optical optimization across the zoom range. The design emphasizes consistent imaging performance and coordinated variator–compensator motion, reflecting an integrated approach to continuous zoom lens development.
