This 6-day live workshop is designed for students, researchers, and engineers who want to learn practical optical design using Zemax. The workshop focuses on real-world workflows, optimization techniques, performance analysis, and hands-on design exercises.
The workshop begins with an introduction to Zemax OpticStudio and its role in modern optical design. Participants will be guided through the installation and setup of the Zemax Student Version, followed by a detailed walkthrough of the software interface and workflow. The session will cover the fundamentals of Sequential Mode, including how to create an optical system and define key system parameters such as wavelengths, field points, aperture settings, focal length, and image plane configurations. By the end of the session, participants will be comfortable navigating Zemax and building basic optical systems from scratch.
This session focuses on understanding and evaluating optical system performance. Participants will learn how to use Zemax analysis tools to assess the quality of a design through various performance metrics. Topics include system visualization, spot diagrams, ray aberration plots, wavefront analysis, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), Encircled Energy, and other commonly used analysis features. The objective is to develop the ability to interpret analysis results and identify performance limitations within an optical design.
Day three introduces the optimization workflow in Zemax. Participants will learn how optimization algorithms work, the different optimization options available, and how to improve system performance systematically. The session will cover the creation and modification of Merit Functions, the use of Merit Function Operands, and practical strategies for driving a design toward specified performance goals. A complete workflow for optimizing an optical system will be demonstrated through hands-on examples
This session focuses on preparing designs for real-world manufacturing. Participants will gain an understanding of optical tolerances, their significance in product performance, and the impact of manufacturing variations on optical systems. The workshop will demonstrate how to perform tolerance analysis in Zemax and interpret the results. In addition, participants will learn how to generate lens element drawings and documentation suitable for communication with optical manufacturers and fabrication vendors.
Participants will apply the concepts learned in previous sessions by designing and optimizing an eyepiece based on a given set of optical specifications. The complete design process will be covered, including specification interpretation, initial layout creation, performance evaluation, optimization, and final verification. This project provides practical experience in solving a real optical design problem using industry-standard workflows.
The final session presents a comprehensive optical design project focused on a camera lens. Participants will learn how to translate system requirements into an optical design, evaluate performance across the specified operating conditions, and optimize the lens to meet target specifications. The session integrates all concepts covered throughout the workshop and demonstrates a complete end-to-end optical design workflow representative of real-world engineering applications.
